After enduring several painful months witnessing the decline and ultimate death of a loved one, author Charlie Hudson recognized that she needed to radically change her views on the realities of aging. Known for her easy storytelling style in both nonfiction and fiction, Hudson departs from her usual subject matter here, tackling aging, mental decline, and death—topics we so often avoid.
Hudson’s perspective reaches far beyond the knowledge that we will all pass away; in Your Room at the End she weaves her own experiences with advice from doctors, nurses, accountants, estate experts, and other professionals providing answers to questions we are reluctant to ask or never even knew we had to ask.
Sylvia E. J. Kidd, Director of Family Programs, Association of the US Army
“Your Room at the End is a very thought-provoking read. Aging and end-of-life preparation is an unpleasant topic for most families; however, this is an important discussion for families to have so that they are prepared when faced with this stage of life—either for a loved one or themselves. It can help to make a difficult time much less stressful.”
Julie Hall, The Estate Lady®, Author of The Boomer Burden
“These are daunting issues that leave most of us in the dark, not knowing the facts or best direction and decisions to make. This book will help you sidestep the many landmines, offering direct advice armed with practical knowledge! The author has a very keen awareness of the subject matter to guide those of us who need assistance.”
Robin Benoit, Author of Jillian’s Story How Vision Therapy Changed My Daughter’s Life
“we should all say thank you to Charlie Hudson! She has taken a very difficult topic and beautifully turned it into a guide to use as we and our loved ones age. Her book really touched my heart. As a forty-seven-year-old woman who adores her eighty-year-old mother, I felt as if she was writing this just for me. I found answers to questions for which I had been searching and answers to questions I did not know I would someday ask. By nature, I am a planner; by career choice, a planner; but I have not planned for my room at the end. Thanks to Charlie, I will!”
June B. Craig, PhD, Nutrition and Marketing Consultant
“Charlie Hudson is amazing! She opened her heart to someone who was dying and embraced the unique nature of the journey we all face. This book is not only about Charlie’s journey but more importantly, it is about the problems she observed and the solutions that she sought. Join Charlie as she shares her insights and her hope that you will find something in her experiences to share with your own family and ‘special family’ of friends.”

Your Room at the End edition by Charlie Hudson Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Your Room at the End is an eye-opener. I wasn't sure what I expected, but
Charlie Hudson really does tackle some difficult subjects in a way that
removes much of the reluctance to discuss them. Her repeated theme of
making a basic plan for your senior years and then adjusting the plan
depending on what your individual needs actually are makes sense. That she
can make this point in an easy-to-read style is what is remarkable about
the book.
Charlie Hudson's Your Room at the End is an excellent introduction to what can be expected as we care for our aging loved ones and ,eventually, decisions that we will make for ourselves. What Charlie emphasizes is it is never too early to make your wishes known and plan ahead. The book looks at a variety of possible financial situations and suggests how to plan for the care you would like to receive. Your Room at the End comes with great resources to begin the planning process that should greatly relieve the stress on our children as we get older. Excellent springboard for family discussion!!
The information in the book "Your Room At The End" is timely and helpful. Charlie guides us through the steps of aging, as a person and as a caregiver. The book is concise and to the point. The sources and resources listed in the book are invaluable. A must read.
Charlie Hudson has written a book that highlights areas of difficulty and concern as one ages. The book is extremely helpful in thinking and guiding actions for one's parents or loved ones that are getting up in age, but it is also a helpful pathway for yourself. We never know when something is going to change our sense of "normal" and many of the discussion points assist in plotting a course for oneself. Charlie's way of infusing personal stories to highlight the situations adds a personal touch that draws you into the topic. I believe this is a beneficial guide for all to plan for the future.
Charlie Hudson has written an insightful answer to the following questions about aging and death, “Do you want to remain ignorant hoping death will be simple and quick?; who do you want responsible for your end-of-life decisions?; and how and where will you live?”
Far too many find themselves aging slowly with loss of physical and mental processes unnoticeable until it interferes with normal functioning. Most responses to getting your affairs in order are, “Let’s not talk about this now, you’re in perfect health; I don’t want to talk about this right now, I’m doing fine; I’m going to die in my sleep,” or variations of these sentiments.
Hudson’s experience with the slow decline and eventual death of her maternal and paternal grandmother’s and her first husband’s mother, provides insights for readers to prepare for their own and others “winter stage” of their lives. Thoughts, observations noted in her journal, and recommendations from professionals tending the elderly provide a well rounded planning aid and resource that allows for individual decisions based on adaptations to particular changes in the aging process.
An important part of aging is the consideration of quality of life. What is quality to one may be unacceptable to another. Decisions as quality declines and what possible interventions are used to enhance and sustain life are discussed in Part II. Just like deciding who will make your decisions and where will you live as your faculties fail, the answers to “what is quality of life and what life saving measures do you want performed?” must be answered.
I especially like the sources, resources and recommended organizations at the end. When I need an answer, I read everything I can find with the desire to make my decision based on a strong foundation of information.
Stop denying the aging process or you may find yourself unable to stop the decisions being made for you by someone who has a different quality of life point of view or is making decisions based on the false hope you’ll be fine. Read “Your Room at the End Thoughts About Aging We’d Rather Avoid” and decide where you will live, what is quality of life, who will pay your bills during a crisis, settle your estate, etc.
You, your loved one, friends, and all those responsible for disbursement of your estate, will be thankful for your plan for your room at the end.
Extremely well written and covers the areas we face when dealing with the end of our lives and those of our families.
Since every one is going to die...this would be one great book to read before...even a long time before that happens.
